I have always loved looking at photographs, even at a young age. Intrigued that a two- dimensional image of people and places I would never know or visit could evoke such strong emotions in me. Secretly I harbored the desire to create inspiring images of my own. I first picked up a camera seriously ten years ago and set out on the journey to become a photographer.Over the years my work has evolved from an effort to produce a photograph that is technically correct to the desire to create an image that has emotional value, an image that will strike a chord with the viewer allowing them to see the world around them in a new and different way.
I love color. Bold, vivid colors demand attention while the soft hues of dusk and dawn calm and sooth our souls. For me, the quality of light and the way it is reflected off of those colors defines the road the image will travel. Sometimes I know what the destination will be when I snap the shutter. Other times I follow a non-traditional path that leads to an unexpected end.
The advent of digital photography and the digital darkroom has unleashed an arsenal of tools to assist the artist in the creative process. Tools when used in bold strokes or small dabs combine to enhance the photographer’s original vision. To quote Deb Sandidge, one of my favorite contemporary photographers, “I like that a photograph can be the beginning of an image rather than the end.”
I am primarily self-taught although I have taken several on-line photography classes and have participated in photo workshops and summits.
I was recently asked what inspires me. Who isn’t inspired by the colors of sunrise, a budding rose, late afternoon reflections or the smile of a child? We live in a world surrounded by God’s amazing creations. Inspiration can be found all around us. My hope is that anyone viewing my work will be drawn in to the sense of time and place that originally inspired the image.
I currently reside in Marco Island, Florida with my husband and Golden Retriever mix. I have two sons, two daughters by marriage and two amazing grandchildren who provide endless opportunity and inspiration.
My work can be seen at The Artist Colony at the Esplanade, Portside Gallery, Marco Island, Florida.
